Also, if you decide to ping, say something more than just "Hi", "Hello", "How is it going?", "How are you?" - It means nothing when you do not know each other. Generally the moment I log in, I start getting DMs. If your message is nothing but a Hi, you are almost sure to be ignored, not by choice but due to lack of it.
